Kitchen in a 1930s house in The Hague
A custom kitchen in a 1930s house in The Hague, designed at home and coordinated with an interior stylist. A long oak wall hides the technology, a white island with a table brings the conversation to the middle of the room. Understated, with respect for what has stood here for ninety years.

The wish: a kitchen that does not shout
A 1930s house in a stately neighbourhood of The Hague, with high ceilings, lots of glass and an ornament above the spot where the dining table once stood. Step inside and you go back in time for a moment, except the house has a new coat. A house like this does not ask for a kitchen that demands attention, but for a kitchen that lets the house speak.
The design: technology behind oak
All the technology is hidden behind a long wall of oak, from floor to cornice, so you only see wood and no appliances. The island is white and light, with a table attached that pulls the conversation to the middle of the room. Rattan lamps soften the light from the bay window. Together with an interior stylist we let kitchen and living room tell one story.
Materials and details
The oak wall was drawn through to the ceiling cornice, so the height of the house is used rather than ignored. The white island keeps the whole light and connects to the original details of the house. The rattan lamps and stool bring the warmth of the wood back into the room without making it heavy.
The result
A kitchen in The Hague that does not feel new, but as if it should always have been this way. Exactly what a 1930s house deserves.
