The wish: living instead of working
For generations this grower's house in Kwintsheul revolved around work, around early starts and late nights. After the renovation the house could finally be about living. The owners wanted a kitchen that brings calm, that does not compete with the green behind the glass, and where you eat where you cook. The first evening I sat at the old kitchen table looking out over the garden, and the answer was already there.
The design: bringing the garden into the kitchen
The garden decides everything in this kitchen design. Dark brown wood that absorbs the light instead of reflecting it, warm as the soil outside. A lightly veined worktop that opens up the space and stays cool under your hands. Natural tones in everything around it, so the green outside keeps the leading role. At the island a piece of tree trunk, left rough, as a table for breakfast, coffee and guests. They call it Japandi. I call it a kitchen that is quiet when you want it to be and full when the house is full.
Materials and details
The fronts are finished in dark brown wood with a matt surface, so fingerprints and reflections stay away. The worktop is light with a fine veining, which keeps the island from feeling heavy in the room. The tree trunk at the island was deliberately kept rough and matches the height of the worktop, so it works as a proper dining table. Lighting, sockets and extraction are placed so that you only notice them when you need them.
The result
A kitchen in Kwintsheul that radiates calm and is still the heart of the house. You do not draw a kitchen like this from a showroom; you draw it in the house where it will stand, with the garden in view and the owners at the table.
